Seed
Bed Preparation Guide
|
| When
constructing a new lawn or turf it is very important to prepare the
seed bed correctly as this will help to produce a quality lawn. |
| Site
Investigation |
| Prior
to the start of ground preparation it is important to check what the
underlying soil conditions are like and if there are any cables or
pipes below the surface, this may save time and money in the future. |
| Cultivation |
Treat
all annual and perennial weeds and surface vegetation with a translocated
herbicide leaving for 3 or 4 weeks to allow the chemical to work.
Cultivate soil to a depth of 10-15cm, either by digging with a spade or using
a rotavator.
Remove all large stones that may have been disturbed during cultivation. If the
soil structure and texture is poor add some organic material such as peat and
some sharp sand, this will also help in drainage. The amounts needed will depend
on individual soil types.
Any material added should be well incorporated into the soil. |
| Raking
and Levelling |
Large
lumps of soil should be broken down.
After initial raking the area should be firmed either by treading or lightly
rolling, this will help firm any soft areas of ground and break up any lumps.
Rake and level soil removing all stones and undulations to produce a fine seedbed. |
| Fertiliser |
| A pre-seeding Fertiliser can be added prior to sowing this will help
in the establishment of the new sward. |
